Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

1) Transitive verbs

A transitive verb is a verb that requires an object to make sense. The object of a transitive verb comes directly after the verb.
Examples:
I bought a car.
She brought her sister to the party.

2) Intransitive verbs

- An intransitive verb is a verb that doesn’t require an object to make sense.
Example:
The baby smiled.

- If we want to add an object to an intransitive verb, it comes after a preposition.
Example:
She arrived in New York yesterday.

3) Verbs that can be transitive or intransitive

Some verbs can be both transitive and intransitive, depending on how they are used in a sentence.
Examples:
He plays the guitar. (Transitive verb)
He plays with his sister. (Intransitive verb)
