1) What are superlative adjectives?
Superlative adjectives are adjectives that we use to compare one thing with several others.
Example:
The giraffe is tall. ('tall' is an adjective)
The giraffe is the tallest. ('tallest' is a superlative adjective)
2) How to form superlative adjectives
- To make a superlative adjective of an adjective that has one syllable, such as fast, we add -est to its end.
Example:
The horse is fast.
The horse is the fastest.
- To make a superlative adjective of an adjective that has one syllable ending in -e, such as large, we add -st to its end.
Example:
Russia is large.
Russia is the largest.
- To make a superlative adjective of an adjective that has one syllable ending in a consonant + a vowel + a consonant, such as big, we double the last consonant and add -est to its end.
Example:
The elephant is big.
The elephant is the biggest.
- To make a superlative adjective of an adjective that has two syllables ending in -y, such as happy, we remove -y and add -iest to its end.
Example:
Emma is happy.
Emma is the happiest.
- To make a superlative adjective of an adjective that has two or more syllables, such as expensive, we add 'most' before it.
Example:
The plane is expensive.
The plane is the most expensive.
- To make a superlative adjective of an irregular adjective, such as good, we change the whole adjective.
Example:
David is a good singer.
David is the best singer.
